The four oldest children of Richard (1) and Susanna were bap. in Tysoe: William, 1668 Apr 13; Mary, 1673 May 6; Anne 1675/76 Jan 31; and Philip, 1679 Sep 17. Richard is first found in SI court records, 1681/82 Feb, and William in July 1681 in jury duty, and Philip Wells, Richard's brother-in-law, in 1680 Oct. It is likely they all came together. William (2) Merrill 1668 of Tysoe, Warwickshire; Staten Island; and St. Mary's County, MD
According to Bob Davidson and Howard and Jean Merrill, the oldest son of Richard(1) was William (2) Merrill b.1668 who went to St. Mary's County MD. William(2) 1668 should not be confused with William 1645 of Somerset County MD, known as "William of Maryland", or William (1) 1652 of Hopewell NJ. William (2) 1668 has no known living descendants.
"William (2), son of Richard(1), was bapt. 1668 in Tysoe. After an apparent estrangement from his father, William(2) moved to St. Mary's Co MD, m. Ann Angel and d. there in 1712. He was too young to be the William who served on Jury duty in 1681 or bought land in 1683." [H&J Merrill, 3/22/09].
William (1) Merrell abt.1652 of Right Bank Avon; Tysoe; Staten Island; and Hopewell NJ
Changes in spelling (Merrill/Merrell) are disregarded. Richard(1) and William(1) are believed to be brothers, and by DNA evidence, at least close cousins. They both came to Staten Island, NY about 1680 [Howard and Jean Merrill, 10/18/09].
William (1) served on Jury duty in Staten Island in 1681, and bought land there in 1683 which he and his wife sold in 1687 before moving to NJ, ending up in Hopewell, NJ. [H&J Merrill, 3/22/09].

William(2), son of William(1), was born at Tysoe in 1676 [Ragusa GEDCOM 10/09].
Capt. Benjamin (3) Merrill 1731 of Hopewell NJ and Rowan County NC
Benjamin (3) Merrill 1731 is a grandson of William (1) Merrill 1652 and not of Richard(1) Merrill 1642. William Ernest Merrill, author of "Captain Benjamin Merrill and the Merrills of NC" is in error on this point. Benjamin(3) was b. in Hopewell before moving to NC. [H&J Merrill, 3/22/09].
