Ray DNA Genealogy

There are about 15 human Y-DNA haplogroups.  These are subpopulations having specific genetic mutations that occurred up to 60,000 years ago.  Broad prehistoric migrations have been traced by determining the prevalence of individual haplogroups in specific geographic regions.  See Y-DNA Haplogroup Descriptions.

My maternal grandfather was Reginald Piffard Ray (1880-1960).  A male Ray descendant, my first cousin, has been tested by Sorenson.  His 37 measured DNA markers are included in the Sorenson and Ysearch databases.  He is a descendant of Thomas Ray, b.abt.1625 in London, England.

As of May 2007, 10 Ray surname males appear in the Sorenson web site.  Search the Y-Chromosome database for surname Ray and look for  "RAY[USA-New York]: 2 gen, RAY[~USA-New York: 2 gen."  As of May 2007, it is in position 10 if the default marker values (the most prevalent values in the database) are used.  My cousin is not related to any other subject in the Sorenson database, of any surname.

As of May 2007, 20 Ray surname males appear in the Ysearch web site.  Search the database for surname Ray and look for ID 3YMEX.  My cousin is not related to any other subject in the Ysearch database, of any surname.  Among subjects of any surname who had at least 18 of the same markers tested, three subjects are at a genetic distance of 5, and none is closer.
