Merrill/Merrell Y-DNA results from Ysearch

Ysearch is a free public service from Family Tree DNA (FTDNA).

Ysearch allows people that have tested with the different companies to make their results available for comparison.

At present, there are 49 Merrills/Merrells who have posted their Y-DNA results on Ysearch.

This number is more than half of the 89 Merrills/Merrells who have been tested.

Not included in the 49 are duplicate entries, and some special records such as the Atlantic Modal Haplotype (AMH).

The AMH is shown here for comparison with R1b haplotypes.

Ysearch results for 49 Merrills/Merrells:

All haplotypes: (49 records) in PDF format.

The results in this file were gathered from Ysearch at various times prior to 2/14/10.

Please report any errors that are noticed, relative to the files listed below.

Public files: testees are not identified:
                                Version 1, 2/14/10

The following files were copied directly from Ysearch results as of 2/14/10.

Please report any later changes that are noticed in posted values.

In the 49-record file above, results are presented in the following order:

G Nathaniel: (9 records) haplogroup G, descendants of Nathaniel Merrill b.1601 of Newbury, Massachusetts.
Misc: (4 records) misc haplogroups; and an R1b descendant of Marriner Wood Merrill 1835 of New Brunswick, Canada.
R1b Maryland: (4 records): haplogroup R1b, descendants of William Merrill b.ca1645 of Somerset County, Maryland.
R1b Saybrook: (4 records): haplogroup R1b, descendants of Thomas Merrill b.ca1600 of Saybrook, Connecticut.
R1b SI Richard: (6 records): haplogroup R1b, descendants of Richard Merrill b.ca.1642 of Staten Island, New York.
R1b SI William: (10 records): haplogroup R1b, descendants of William Merrill b.ca.1652 of Staten Island, New York.
R1b Unassigned: (12 records): haplogroup R1b, subjects not associated with any other Merrill/Merrell.

Atlantic Modal: (1 record): Atlantic Modal haplotype, for comparison with individual R1b records.

Definitions:

Although definitions vary, haplogroup and haplotype are frequently defined as follows.

            See http://www.eupedia.com/europe/origins_haplogroups_europe.shtml .

A haplogroup is a group of haplotypes with a common ancestor at least 2,000 ybp (years before present).

A haplotype is a group of related individuals with a common ancestor less than 2,000 ybp.

The modal haplotype is the set of the modal values of each marker, within a particular haplotype.

The modal haplotype may or may not be the actual haplotype of the common ancestor.

The actual haplotype of the common ancestor is unknown, unless a preserved DNA sample exists.

Shading:

G Nathaniel (9 records): shaded relative to the G Nathaniel modal haplotype.

The multi-copy marker DYS464 is treated as a single marker, due to disagreement in the reported number of copies.

Haplogroup R1b (36 records): (all R1b haplotypes except R1b New Brunswick): shaded relative to Atlantic Modal haplotype.

The multi-copy marker DYS464 is treated as four individual markers.

            Misc: (4 records): unshaded.

Reliability of Ysearch data:

Because users can post their own results in Ysearch, the posted data are not entirely reliable.

Values are shown here exactly as posted, even where errors are known to exist.

Posted values may have changed without notice after the results shown here were gathered.

There are six "troublesome" markers, whose definitions vary with laboratory and time period.  See conversion.htm.

In Ysearch one cannot know whether the user correctly converted to a standard nomenclature.

Most troublesome is marker H4, which FTDNA defines differently from the other laboratories.

In Ysearch one cannot know whether the user converted to standard nomenclature, or copied the value reported by FTDNA.

It is not even known, which value of H4 is intended to be standard Ysearch nomenclature.

In the Merrill/Merrell DNA project, the reported H4 values are one greater than those reported by FTDNA.
