Only the Staten Island portion of this page is up to date.
Among Merrills
and Merrells who have had their Y-Chromosome DNA
tested (or pending), there are 55 of the R1b
haplogroup.
Historical Evidence:
Of
the 26 tested or pending SI Merrill/Merrells, 17 have
known ancestry - 8 from Richard(1) and 9 from
William(1).
DNA Markers:
As
far as is known, the descendants of Richard(1) and
William(1) can be distinguished by the value of one Y-DNA marker, if that
marker has been measured. The value is D464d=16 or 17 for descendants of Richard(1) or William(1), respectively. Prior to February 2010, DYS576=18 was observed only with DYS464d=16 (in two Richard descendants).
DYS576=17 was observed only with DYS464d=17 (in three William descendants and one unknown).
That pattern was broken by D.P.169442 (ancestry unknown), who has DYS576=17 and DYS464d=16.
Tentatively, all Staten Island testees of unknown ancestry are now classified on the basis of their DYS464d values alone. Only the markers which exhibit variation among
the 26 tested or pending SI Merrill/Merrells are
shown.

Relationship of Richard(1) and William(1):
Historical Evidence:
*Bob Davidson stated that
the William Merrill who went to Somerset County, Maryland was a son of Richard
Merrill of Staten Island, but this is contradicted by the DNA evidence. Davidson
also stated that the William Merrill who went to Hopewell NJ was not a son, but
could have been a cousin, which is consistent with the DNA evidence. Richard

England; [m.1669 in Tysoe to Sarah Wells 1649-1722;

They are believed to be brothers. [No birth or baptism record for William(1) is known to exist. 5/20/10]
William(1) served on jury duty in 1681 and
bought property there in 1683. He and his wife Grace sold that same
property in 1687 before moving to Middletown NJ in 1687. He later moved to
Hopewell NJ in 1704 where he d. in 1724. Richard(1) did have a son William(2),
bapt 1668 Apr 13 inTysoe, but
this son William would have been too young to have served on Jury duty in 1681
or bought property in 1683, so we are talking about two different
Williams. Richard's son William (2), after an apparent disagreement with
his father, left SI and moved to St Mary's County MD, m. Ann Angel and had
several children by her before he d. there in 1712.
DNA Evidence:
Using Tim Janzen's variance calculator, Gary Merrill has estimated, for all Merrill/Merrells of the Staten Island haplotype, that the TMRCA (time since most recent common ancestor) is about 400-500 years (about 1500-1600). The uncertainties are considerable. William(1) and Richard(1) were definitely related, but from the available DNA data one cannot determine whether or not they were brothers.

R1b-haplogroup Merrill/Merrells have had their Y-Chromosome
DNA tested. Including some duplicates, there are 18 R1b Merrill or Merrells in smgf.org,
approximately 30 in ysearch.org, and 5 in ybase.org.
There are none in dna.ancestry.com. The 35-40 Merrill/Merrells of haplotype R1b fall
into the following subgroups: (a) *Staten Island haplotype:
11 descendants of Richard (1) Merrill 1642 of Staten Island, William (2)
Merrill 1668 of Hopewell NJ, or Capt. Benjamin Merrell (4) 1731 of NC. (b) *Maryland haplotype:
3 descendants of William Merrill b.1645, of Somerset County, MD. (c) New Brunswick haplotype:
4 descendants of Marriner Wood Merrill b.1832, the
Utah pioneer. (d) Saybrook haplotype: 4 descendants of Thomas Merrill d.1611 of Saybrook CT. These include Gary Merrill, a
co-administrator of the Merrill-DNA
discussion group, and the administrator of the DNA Heritage Merrill DNA project. (e) approximately 15
unrelated R1b haplotypes, including David Merrell and
Howard Merrill. David and Howard are two of the four co-administrators of
the Merrill-DNA
discussion group. David is the administrator of the Family Tree DNA Merrill DNA project.

Staten Island Haplotype
This is the haplotype shared by descendants of
Richard(1) Merrill b.abt.1642 and William(1) Merrell
b.abt.1652 of Warwickshire, England and Staten Island, New York. 26 of
the 55 tested or pending R1b Merrill/Merrells, all in
the US, share the Staten Island (SI)haplotype.
Distinguishing Richard(1) from William(1) descendants:
On the basis of the combined ancestry
and DNA information, 10 of the 26 tested or pending SI Merrill/Merrells are
believed to descend from Richard(1), and 16
from William(1).
