Among Merrills and Merrells who have had their Y-Chromosome DNA tested, there are 32 of the G haplogroup.

The modal Merrill haplotype agrees closely with that reported in Table G1 of Whit Athey's G Haplogroup web site.
The assignment of Nathaniel Merrill and his descendants to Haplogroup G is based on analysis of persons with similar haplotypes.

Nathaniel Merrill Haplotype
This is the haplotype shared by descendants of Nathaniel Merrill(1) b.1601 of Wherstead, Suffolk, England and Newbury, Massachusetts. 29 of the 32 G Merrills, all in the US, share the Nathaniel haplotype.

Twenty-four of the 29 have known pedigrees from Nathaniel(1) 1601-1655, who emigrated from Wherstead, Suffolk, England to Newbury, Massachusetts. The other five are closely related, but their ancestry is not known.

If your DNA results differ from these 29, then you are not a biological descendant or cousin of Nathaniel(1). There are many Merrills and Merrells of other haplogroups, in particular the R1B Haplogroup.

Nathaniel Merrill Haplotype Network Analysis

This analysis compares 9 DNA markers among 10 supposed descendants of Nathaniel(1) Merrill 1601-1654/5. As expected, only minor variations are found. This analysis will be repeated for 11 markers which show variation among for 16 Nathaniel descendants.
