f. Jesse Merrill (1762-1840) m. 1789 Priscilla Kimball (1768-1864). Jesse left Haverhill, Mass., and bought a farm in Peacham, Vt. Julia Matisoo has visited the area, both as a child and, again, in 1992, and has taken a few photographs of family grave markers in the Peacham cemetery.

g. Samuel Merrill (1792-1855) m. (1) 1818 Lydia Jane Anderson (1802-1847); (2) 1849 Elizabeth Young.  Samuel went to Indiana Territory and, among other positions and occupations, became the first treasurer of the state. He also founded a bookstore and publishing company, Merrill & Company, in Indianapolis.  This later became Bobbs-Merrill, a publishing company which was in existence until the 1960s or '70s.

h. Julia Dumont Merrill (1829-1912) m. 1854 Charles Washington Moores (1828-1864), who died in his 30s in the Civil War.  When John Muir was working in Indianapolis in 1867, he had an accident which severely injured his eye. Samuel Merrill and his family saw to it that Muir received the best medical care available at that time. Julia Merrill Moores and her sister, Catharine Merrill, one of the first women professors in America, spent many hours reading to Muir as he recuperated from the eye injury. This began a lifelong friendship between Muir and both Julia and Catharine. Julia had three children: Merrill, Charles and Janet. Merrill, at age 11, accompanied John Muir on a walking tour from Indianapolis to Portage, Wisconsin, and spent a summer with him in the Yosemite area in 1872, when he was 16 years old. Julia Matisoo has a letter which Muir wrote to Merrill's younger brother, Charles, and also a letter written by their sister, Janet, when she visited the Muir family in Martinez in 1887, describing the Muir household and family.

i. The Moores line started out in this country in Newbury, Mass., in 1638, when an Edward Moores located his family there and was appointed administrator of the estate of John Lowell. It would seem that the Merrills and Moores had to travel as far as Indiana and Illinois before they got together. Julia Matisoo's brother, Charles W. Moores IV, moved to the Boston area after he finished his graduate studies at Purdue University and one of his daughters is now married and living in Newburyport -- almost a full circle.

j. Charles Washington Moores, Jr. (1862-1923) m. 1896 Elizabeth Thompson Nichols.

k. Charles Washington Moores III (1902-1956) m. 1936 Margaret Elsie Jones (1911-1991).

m. Julia Merrill Moores (1938-) m. 1959 Andres Matisoo (1936-).
