It was reported in The Merrill Newsletter, Vol.1, No.2 by Don Merrill in an article "Nathaniel in the White House," that George W. Bush's mother, Barbara PIERCE Bush (1925-), is a third (great) grandniece of President Franklin PIERCE (1804-1869) and therefore a descendant of Nathaniel Merrill b.1601. This is incorrect. Barbara and Franklin are fourth cousins four times removed (4C4R), and Barbara and her son do not have (known) Merrill ancestry. For details and sources, see barbara.html.
